Road signs and traffic facilities

  • Basics of traffic signs

Regulations through traffic signs always take precedence over general regulations.

They are fast and easy to understand thanks to their symbols (also international). And what is best: you do not have to be able to read to understand their meaning.

System and logic

Road signs are divided up into danger signs, mandatory signs and advisory signs. They are distinguished by their shape and colour.

Danger is always signalled by a triangle pointing upwards with a red edge.

A command is always to be found on a round disc with a blue background.

A prohibition is always represented by a disc with a red edge on a white background.

Information signs are always rectangular or pentagonal, blue, yellow, white or green.

Danger Signs

Danger

Posted before dangerous areas, example construction sites.

Crossroads

Indicates an intersection or junction that is hard to see, or an intersection that is not expected.

Single Curve

Indicates a single curve and its direction.

Double Curve

Indicates a double curve and its directions.

Dangerous Downgrade

Indicates degree of downgradePosted before steep downgrades.

Dangerous Upgrade

Posted before steep upgrades; indicates degree of upgrade.

Rough Road

Indicates uneven stretches of road.

Slippery Road

Indicates stretches of road that may be slippery when wet or dirty.

Side wind

Drop your speed. You must reckon with gusts of wind and be prepared to countersteer. Avoid overtaking.

Carriageway gets narrower

Approach with caution, watch out for oncoming traffic and allow the oncoming traffic to leave the narrow stretch of road first. Do not overtake.

A carriageway which narrows on one side only

Oncoming traffic must be given priority. If a lane ends, the zipper feed-in method must be followed

Roadworks

Drive carefully; watch out for working implements, construction vehicles, construction material and workers on the road. There is often also a danger of skidding or slipping due to muddy or uneven road.

Traffic jam

When approaching a traffic jam, use the hazard warning lights.

Oncoming traffic

This sign is located in the area where roadworks are on or at the end of an Autobahn in order to draw attention to the oncoming traffic. It is also used to mark the end of a one-way street.

Traffic lights

Announces a crossroads, junction or pelican crossing controlled by traffic lights or a signal system before you come to roadworks.

Pedestrians

On roads marked as one-way, heavy pedestrian traffic must be expected.

Children

Danger to children must be avoided! Be extra careful, be ready to brake if necessary and reduce your speed.

Cyclists

Caution in the intersection area: Cyclists could cross your lane!

Road signs can be supplemented by additional signs. They are mounted immediately below the road sign.

Road signs also include carriageway markings.

Graphic characters and the image of a traffic sign on the carriageway indicate an installed traffic sign.

It is not always easy to get to grips with such a „forest of signs“.

You first of all have to decide: Which traffic signs apply for me? Then you need to orientate your actions in line with them. At road works, it is also often the case that the traffic signs are wrongly positioned, with the result that their meaning is sometimes not clear cut.

Nevertheless, misunderstandings can also occur even when there is only one traffic sign.

In this way, there are not only similar traffic signs, but they can also be

  • Grown over
  • Covered
  • Weather damaged
  • Snowed over

It is not seldom the case that they are covered in advertisements or other stickers/labels.

That means there are several reasons for failure to observe traffic signs:

Not seeing them

Was the traffic sign covered/hidden? Was the driver distracted?

Did the driver fail to perceive the traffic sign?

Not recognizing them

Were the associated regulations not known?

Not accepting them

Were the rules known but deliberately ignored?

n     Special features

Important traffic signs should always be easy to recognize (also in the case of snow, from behind etc.). As a result, they have special forms.

Basic rules, road signs and traffic facilities

. …………………………………………… .

Traffic signs not only have the „classic“ sign form, but are also extant as road lane markings.

Most markings require a definite form of behavior, they are therefore regulatory signs.

Typical examples are: traffic lane markings and delimitations, prohibited areas or arrow markings or pedestrian crossings.

The guide marking and waiting line are counted as regulatory signs.

Traffic signs can also be provided by lights.

These are the so-called matrix signs. The meaning of traffic signs remains unchanged, but here otherwise white areas are black. The symbols or figures are not black as is usual, but instead white.

Indicate a danger that is not always immediately recognisable to the road user or where no danger is assumed.

Danger signs raise the awareness to be prepared for the announced danger.
General danger signs

General danger signs

Danger signs are triangular with a red border, the tip pointing upwards.

The symbols describe what the announced danger is.

Danger point
An additional sign can describe the danger in more detail.

Slippery snow or ice

There is a danger of icy roads.

Drive slowly and avoid jerky steering movements.
Intersection or junction

Intersection or junction with right of way from the right.

Curve

Curve on the left

Reduce speed and drive as far to the right as possible.
Slope

The braking distance is longer on a downhill slope.

If the brake is applied for a longer time, the braking effect may decrease.
Slope

If necessary, shift down when driving uphill.
Uneven road surface

You should reduce your speed if you see this traffic sign.
Crosswind

If there is a crosswind, reduce speed and adjust to countersteer.
Risk of skidding or sliding

Risk of skidding or sliding in wet or dirty conditions.
One-sided, narrow lane

Give way to oncoming traffic and use the zip procedure if there are two lanes for one direction.
Oncoming traffic

You must expect oncoming traffic here.
Cycling traffic

Cyclists can cross the carriageway here.
Children

You must be prepared for children playing here.

Reduce speed, be ready to brake and drive with the utmost attention.

Traffic jam

Here you must expect traffic jams and that the vehicle in front will suddenly brake.

As a precaution, increase the distance and drive with increased attention.

Switch on the hazard warning lights in the event of a traffic jam.

Traffic lights

Indicate a traffic light.
Work site

Expect construction site vehicles, workers and building materials on the roadway here.
Level crossing

Level crossing in the road leading to the right.

Single-lane beacon

Single-lane beacon about 80 m before the level crossing.
Pedestrian

You must expect increased pedestrian traffic here.

You must pay particular attention to pedestrians.
Deer crossing

Watch out for game that might cross the carriageway. If animals are in sight, brake immediately and dim your lights.

If there is oncoming traffic, do not attempt any evasive manoeuvres.

Special danger signs

Bad roadside

You must expect poor roadside conditions here.
Winter sports allowed

You must be prepared for winter sports being practised on the carriageway.

You must expect slippery snow and ice on the roadway.

Double bend

Reduce speed and drive as far to the right as possible.
Gradient

A gradient of 800 m follows.
Narrow lane

Reduce speed and do not overtake.

Narrow lane

The additional sign indicates the distance to the narrow section.
Work site

Expect construction vehicles, workers and construction materials on the roadway here.
Two-strip beacon

Beacon about 160 m before the level crossing.

Three-strip beacon

Beacon about 240 m before the level crossing.
Bridleway

Riders are not allowed to use the carriageway, but must use the bridleway. This also applies to leading horses (obligation to use the bridleway).

Other traffic is not allowed to use it.

If the use of a bridleway is permitted for another type of traffic by additional signs, this type of traffic must show consideration for the riding traffic and, if necessary, the vehicle traffic must adapt its speed to the riding traffic.
